1) Because some people who illegally carry a knife or bladed weapon often carry more than one concealed in various places on their body, anyone who has been restrained subsequent to being involved in a bladed weapon incident has to be thoroughly and “carefully” searched. Be careful not to suffer a dangerous “needle stick” injury by concealed syringes that may be contaminated by blood borne disease.

2) Be sure that the person is securely restrained and is unable to switch his own weapons with makeshift weapons that are lying about. (Ashtrays, drinking cups, bottles, pens, pencils, or something that's in arms reach that could be used against you or people around you in a violent fashion.

3) If it is important to transport someone inside a venue or on the street past any members of the public, avoid doing it without an associate unless it is completely vital. Many members belonging to the armed gang culture who may still be in the immediate area could also be carrying bladed and edged weapons and might come to their friend’s help, given the chance.

4) If the person is especially violent, it may be that they are likely to have equally violent associates in the immediate vicinity. Unless it is absolutely essential, wait to move the individual until enough back up is present and preferably wait for the police to arrive.

5) Be aware of the fact that some people could possibly be under the influence of drugs or affected by a mental problem. Whilst you will need to apply the suitable methods of restraint in accordance with assignment directives and legal rights of the person, don't provide them any opportunity to renew an attack upon you or others with an improvised weapon or potentially harmful object which may be accidentally left in their reach.

6) Determine the potential threats to yourself or the person before starting the escort and should violent conflict arise during the escort, act upon them instantly and safely using restraining methods that are permitted by state or federal regulations. Understand that after you have apprehended the person that they are under your duty of care.

7) Acceptable Use of Force. The concept of use of force in a knife attack is rather clear-cut, with several exceptions. Security officers can be punished in the courts for using too much force when managing offenders where their physical response is not appropriate to the amount of danger that the offender is presenting during the incident.

The security officer is quite often using a completely different mindset to an offender and will engage in a violent encounter with a different set of goals. It's also true that offenders have a distinct psychological advantage over security officers by virtue of the fact that they have quite often already formed an attack mindset before the security guard is conscious that danger is on the horizon. While security officers constantly need to be considering the legal ramifications of their actions in response to an attack, a bladed weapon assault leaves no room for this type of divided thinking, as lethal consequences may occur as the results of indecision to defend oneself immediately.

The offender is not going to be constrained by such reasoning because the very nature of a edged weapon assault is a callous and potentially lethal act. For this reason, professional security officers must be particularly aware and both physically and psychologically equipped for such potentially dangerous armed confrontation. You need to remember that as a security officer it is not your role to punish offenders, but on the other hand, a knife or bladed weapon assault should be handled with the utmost gravity. Protecting yourself legally before a situation turns violent is in some ways as important as not being injured during an actual encounter.
