What is the Stevia plant?

This plant is known to belong to the sunflower family. This family has over 240 different kinds of plants. It is most widely used in areas in Central America like Brazil and Paraguay as it is most abundant within these regions. It is said that the Stevia plant is known to have a sweetening ability that is far stronger than that of regular sugar making it more economical to use than any other sweetener.

To sweeten a cup of coffee, you would only need around one or two leaves of the Stevia plant to get that sweet taste.

Where can they be purchased?

Most herbal stores sell large amounts of Stevia plant leaves in small packages. This allows you to carry it around for immediate use. Although most people who use the Stevia plant as a sweetener opt to grow the plant inside their homes. Aside from the fact that it acts as a very attractive ornament, growing it at home means that you have a fresh and convenient source of sweeteners. In addition to this, it allows you to use it for home cooking.

You can purchase seeds of the Stevia plant from health stores as well as a lot of internet shops. You can have the seeds shipped to your house and begin cultivation immediately as the seeds need very little requirements in order for them to be grown.

How does one grow a Stevia plant?

The most important thing that must be remembered about the Stevia plant is the fact that it needs the sun to grow. Light serves as its primary source of nourishment. This means that covering up in the dirt will not do the plant any good. Like all plants, it needs water and proper nourishment to become healthy.

Are there any significant risks to be feared?

No proven risks come with using its leaves. However, some countries in the European region have banned its use as a supplement because of toxicity reports for some animals. It is best that you consult your doctor before ingesting any of its leaves. Though no medical studies suggest that it is indeed harmful
