So you purchased a new luxury condo – congratulations! While you are excited about your new home, there is a big chore standing between you and the new place. Moving. It is never a fun prospect, but we have assembled a few tips and tricks to make your move an easy one.
1. Start Early. Never leave your packing to the last minute! Waiting will make the job seem like a bigger one than it actually is and it will put a lot of pressure on you and your family. Aside from the stress, you will end up moving a lot of items you no longer want. Consider beginning to pack between three and six weeks before moving day.
2. Gather Your Boxes. If you have a friend who works at a fast food restaurant or supermarket, ask them to set aside boxes for you. If you do not know anyone working in one of these places, visit stores around your neighborhood and ask managers if there are any extra boxes you can take off their hands. If they say no, ask when they get deliveries and see if you can return then. While you are there, ask if they have any extra bubble wrap or other packing materials they plan to throw away. This step will reduce the cost of moving into your new condo greatly! Meanwhile, you will be keeping those items from going to the dump.
3. Save Your Papers. If you get a daily newspaper, begin saving them. The papers will make perfect packing materials to keep your breakable dishes, cups and knick-knacks from being jostled or scratched. If you do not get a paper, ask friends, family, co-workers and even neighbors for their old papers.
4. Find Space for Your Boxes. Prepare a place for your boxes to reside before the move. You can clear a large space in your garage, living room or bedroom to fill with your possessions. Finding one spot for your boxes will help you decide how big of a moving van or rental van you will need for the big day.
5. Rid Yourself of Paper. Go through old financial papers, junk mail and other extraneous papers that are lying around your house. Shred any sensitive documents to keep your data safe and use this shredded paper to keep your dishes, cups and other breakables safe during the move.
6. Pack Your Dishes. Go through your kitchen and pack all the dishes and appliances you do not use on a daily basis. Leave out enough utensils, pots, pans and dishes to last you between one and two days. Use this chance to clean out your refrigerator and throw away food that has gone bad.
7. Pack Your Clothes. Start packing your off-season clothes. If you are moving during the summer, pack away your winter items and vice versa. Take time to get rid of pieces you no longer wear or want and consider donating them to local organizations or shelters.
8. Take Down Your Pictures. Remove any extraneous items from your walls and shelves. This includes pictures, ornaments and other things that you do not use every day. Use this time to also pack your photo albums, DVDs and CDs. These tiny items are very time consuming to pack and always take a longer time than you expect. Get this out of the way well before your move and you will save hours when the big day arrives.
9. Pack Your Sheets. Most of us have more than one set of sheets. Go through all the sheets in your closet and search them for holes, rips as well as normal wear and tear. If there are any sheets that are no longer good for your bed, cut them up into rags. You will probably need to take a quick once over your new condo to make it ready for your move in and those old sheets will come in handy!
10. Remove Your Dresser Drawers. This is the one chore that can wait until moving day. Before you take the dresser to the moving van, remove all the drawers with the clothing still in them. Place the drawers directly into your trunk or back seat. When you arrive at your new home or new condo, you can slide the drawers straight into the dresser. This reduces the time you spend emptying, packing and unpacking the clothes while it makes your dresser lighter and easier to move. You can take the same approach with your closet. Put a bar across the top of your back seat and hang all your clothes there. You will be able to walk them from the car to their new home in your spacious closet!
